However, things will soon spin out of control,a malevolently cryptic dark incantation from the pages of a seemingly innocent prop book of spells, inadvertently summons a demonic succubus bent on destruction. Now, try to stop a slaughterous extra-dimensional being with several foam sticks and a handful of plastic swords.

So I see that this movie has gotten mixed reviews so far, but that's not at all surprising; it's not that hard to misinterpret this filmsomething it isn't. It is not specifically a horror movie or a slasher flick; nor yet is it an entirely supernatural movie or a teen movie or an adventure movie. It is a geek movie. It is a movie made with geeks in mind, andsuch, for those who appreciate the abundance of geek/gamer subculture depicted here, it is a mystical gem worth +5 experience points. The dialogue is punchy and hysterical even if you aren't an avid gamer, and yes, Peter Dinklage issues by far the top performance. (But you really have to be paying attention to it even if you'd rather be fawning over Summer Glau.) I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the reviews, but now - in spite of volumes of gore that would make Simon Pegg proud, and a rather silly plot resolution - I'm definitely glad I plunked down and watched it. I thought it was a marvelous, hilarious, raucous romp, not meant to be a serious film at all but just a celebration of geekdom through wackiness. And it's got no shortage of that. Can't wait to share it with my vast circle of nerdy, LARPing, Summer-Glau-worshipping friends.
OK I went into this expecting a lot more. I mean Dinklage, Zahn? Both great and funny actors with lots of charisma. I wouldn't say they are going through the motions here but the material they were given is awful and their characters have zero depth, there's nothing for them to do in this movie. There was no reason for them to be in this movie. There are some funny self aware moments and maybe if you are into this LARP stuff the movie will speak to you more than me, but overall this is a major low budget cheese-fest. Jimmi Simpson was the main bright spot in this movie, playing the "villain" (kind of) in such an over the top manner that you can't help but chuckle every time he says something. I would have liked to see what the Super Troopers guys would have done with the same budget and characters, I have no doubt that it would have been 100x better, and their movies are hit and miss too. The movie itself outside of the LARP setting is a purely paint by numbers affair targeted to the frat boy stoner demographic. Pacing is not bad and the film makers have a handle on the craft part, but there is no story and very little humor. And in that stoner genre there are WAY better movies, the aforementioned Super Troopers for one, and the Harold and Kumar movies for another. Don't waste your time. This is barely on par with straight to cable "ScyFy channel" crud.
Knights of Badassdom actually delivers everything the 2011 Danny McBride-James Franco comedy "Your Highness" purported to be but fell short on. The film is "This Is the End" festooned with Middle Ages accouterments.
